Lindsay native reinvents music career in California

Donny Anderson to share stage with Odyssey Project and Teak Rivers for benefit concert on June 24

(LINDSAY) When Donny Anderson headed to California two years ago, he wasn't planning on reinventing his career.

But that's exactly what happened and, on June 24, the Lindsay native will share some of his newest music with those gathered at the Academy Theatre for Performing Arts for a benefit concert in support of Bradley Duffy - who is currently battling cancer - and the Sick Kids Hospital Foundation. The concert also features The Odyssey Project and recording artist Teak Rivers.

A few years ago, feeling something was "missing," Mr. Anderson put his country music career on hold to work in Toronto.

But one morning in August 2009, he gave his notice, enlisted his brother Jody's help and headed to California.

It didn't take long before Mr. Anderson was writing again, resurrecting old Nashville contacts and tapping into a database of writers who had composed some of the top country songs of the 90s.

Despite attracting attention from the Nashville songwriting community, Mr. Anderson found he was moving in a more contemporary direction. Over several months, he started "figuring out" his voice and connecting with the right people.

He survived four cuts on Canadian Idol, wrote 300 songs - four of them played on national television - was successful in securing a federal government recording grant and launched a mini tour.

He also saw three record deals come and go, but realizes now "it wasn't time."
He might not have been available when Alannah Myles called.
The Canadian music icon had heard him sing and wanted him to join her on tour, which included three weeks in Europe in March.

"Spending five hours in a tour bus, singing every day, getting no sleep...and loving every single moment of it," he quipped. "I feel really grateful for all that's happening."

That tour really helped him see "how my song choices made an impact on the audience" as well as his professional career. "There's always going to be things that influence my music. You have to find out what makes it tick; what works for you," he said. "You have to remember that the only thing that stands in your way, is you...I would never been able to make the connections I did if I hadn't made the conscious decision to take stock of my life. I'm really grateful that I listened to myself."

That doesn't mean Mr. Anderson has left his country roots behind.

"Country music is a more humble place. Everything about it is more lifestyle. Everything is more relatable," he noted. "That's what I've always taken forward with me - being able to remember who I am."

In April, Mr. Anderson spent time in Vancouver writing before embarking on weekly shows at the Hotel Cafe in California throughout May. He recently spent time in Nashville - more writing - and plans to hit the studio this fall.

Before then, Mr. Anderson looks forward to renewing connections with his hometown fans.

"I think it's going to be a great night," he said.

Show time is 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $20 and are available at Olympia Restaurant and Wards Legal or via duffybenefit@hotmail.com.

"Words are a difficult medium to describe the way I feel about Donny Anderson's voice. Truly a special soul sent to me by the Gods to inspire and replenish my faith in the young talent of this decade. If you were to believe in reincarnation, Donny, to me, might be Sam Cooke reborn." - Alannah Myles
